Overview of Healthcare Needs

In Peru, The Global Burden of Disease 2015 study ranks chronic kidney disease (CKD) as the fifth leading cause of death in the country. In 2003, the prevalence of patients on dialysis in Peru was 166 patients per million, one of the lowest in Latin America. However, over the last few years, this prevalence has increased greatly. Additionally, only 4.4 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) is invested in health service, making the access to care in Peru unequal and fractured. Many regions in Peru, especially more rural areas, do not have available dialysis clinics, which can lead to lack of treatment and ultimately death for many patients.
