Carla’s Story

Meet Carla Ocampo, a Facility Administrator at New London Dialysis in Connecticut. Last Fall, Carla caught wind of the cell phone recycling program to benefit DaVita Village Trust and she immediately knew that she could single-handedly contribute to the success of the program.  Carla has reached out to two local casinos to gather their lost and found phones to be recycled through this program. Not only has she spent her personal time to collect these phones, she has spent time educating the employees at the casinos about how the cell phone recycling program through benefits those who are predisposed to kidney disease and or need dialysis in a developing country. Carla serves as an example of the type of person and teammate who goes above and beyond to make a difference in her local community, the environment and to the world around us. Thank you, Carla for making a world of difference!

“You have to think outside of the box. Look at your community and contact any large businesses, schools, hotels, malls, casinos, amusement parks, etc. They all have some sort of lost and found department. It doesn’t hurt to ask. I was turned down by one casino because they turn their phones in and use the funds for their own programs. The DaVita Village Trust, as well as kidney disease, is near and dear to me because of another Village I belong to. I am a Mohegan Tribal member. Being Native American predisposes me to diabetes which is one of the leading causes of kidney disease.  When I learned about the cellular recycling program, I knew I needed to go back to Connecticut and figure out how to arrange for The Mohegan Sun’s lost and found phones to be recycled to benefit The DaVita Village Trust. There is also a Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs in Pennsylvania. Therefore, after I was able to arrange to get the lost found phones from The Mohegan Sun in CT, I connected with the general manager (also a Mohegan Tribal member) and get Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs’ lost and found phones recycled to also benefit The DaVita Village Trust.”
